Title: Tactical Reload  or  Top Off for the Pup?
Post by: Reinz on August 19, 2010, 08:47:23 AM
After reading various new pup owners range reports about successes and faults it got me thinking about how everyone tests their guns and carrys them.

When I go the range I  and start with topping off the mag after chambering a round.
I'll do tactical reloads.
I'll just put a full mag in an empty gun and go from there.
I want to know that my pup can do it all.

However, when I carry, I just load the mag with 6 and put one in the pipe, no top off.
I hear MR  Murphey whispering in my ear.

How about it, what do y'all do?

* for new shooters that are not familiar with the term, a tactical reload is, after you chamber a round, you top off your magazine with another round to make it full.
The only "Tactical Reload" I'm familiar with is after you fire some rounds and you have a chance you put a fresh mag in the pistol.     :)

What you're talking about is just loading the pistol.    ;D

Reinz:

Having grown up in age when spring technology was less than it is now, I got in the habit of carrying one less round than full capacity in my magazines. Old habits die hard. For my R9, I'll load six in the magazine, chamber one, and then leave five stacked behind it. My spare magazine, carried in its Hedley magazine case, is loaded with five rounds -- for a total of "lucky eleven" rounds carried.

And speaking of our dear, departed friend, R. J. Hedley, I am reminded that he once confessed to me that although he loved making holsters, he absolutely disliked making magazine cases. Even so, as all of you who own one or more well know, his mag cases are all superb.

Richard, I'm with you on the spares as well.  I only do five.

I always fiqured RJ disliked making those mag pouches due to his comment on his website.  "only available with purchase of holster".
To me as a manufacturer myself, that spoke volumes.

I carry as many rounds as my three magazines will hold.  That would be 6 each in the two spares and 6+1 in the pup.

I do it at the range too, to make sure all is working as I carry.

All one needs to do is pull the 2nd R9S..  Carry 2 of these bad pups and you are all set!

I could do that, however, would carry mags fully loaded with one in the pipe.  I have read elsewhere that is was good to carry with one less in the mag; just what you get used to.

To my recollection, the famed British SAS were one of the first to require their members to carry one round less than a full magazine in the venerable Browning Hi-Power, their pistol of choice for years. They thought 12 should be enough.

Rack one into the chamber with a full mag,I do not top off mag.

Carry an extra mag(I know about the extra mag case thing with RJ,he said similiar to me,I always bought an extra, extra case) fully loaded in offside pocket.

That is the system I use for all pocket semi's.

On a personal basis, it's just what one prefers.  I just like all the firepower I can have; and can understand those that like to carry one less.

This discussion reminds me of a question asked of Ben Hogan by a golf reporter. He asked Ben if he had rather be one stroke behind or one stroke ahead going into the final round. You can imagine Mr. Hogan's terse response: "Are you crazy?"
