Title: Magazine dropping
Post by: Craigt on January 17, 2010, 06:48:00 PM
I am having problems with the magazine dropping when firing the first round, but only when loaded with 6+1.

A little background first:  I received my R9S in mid 2005.  For nearly 2 years I struggled with various FTF and jamming problems.  Finally when I discovered the new magazine springs in early 2007 this ended virtually all of the jamming / feeding problems.  In the last 142 rounds since replacing the mag springs there has been 1 jam when previously there was a jam in almost every mag full.

17% of mags-full I have shot have had, on the first round, the magazine drop down just enough so the next round is not picked up and chambered.  This only happens when loaded with 6 in the mag + 1 chambered.  Only.  Has never happened with 5+1.

I became so discouraged that I have not shot the R9S in three years.  I just finished my second range session this year, 107 rounds, the only problem is this mag drop problem.  5 times in 11 mags-full loaded 6+1.  I am almost to the place where I am comfortable carrying it but…I’m just not quite there yet.

I did a bit of searching and was not able to find any previous posts although I do recall reading some.

Is there a cure for this?  How many have also had this problem?  Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?  Any help is most appreciated.

I would call the factory on that one and maybe send it back to them assuming that it happens with multiple magazines and you have installed the springs correctly. It sounds like you have both of those bases covered, though.

Further, your magazine dropping has been reported on this forum as you described it but as I recall there was no stated resolution of the problem.
I can't find the thread but do remember it.

Craigt and tracker.  Here is a thread that addressed the problem but didn't resolve it.

Here's another:

The second thread and response from "Erich" looks close to this problem.

You would think so, but why doesn't the mag pop out with only 5 rds. loaded in the mag, and does with 6.

Maybe a combination of less positive "catch", spring tension, etc., and a handling problem; hard to say.

Yes.  Does make sense.

Thanks for the replys.  I have tried to analyze my grip and I can’t see how my hand is pressing the latch open when firing.  It might be happening, it just doesn’t seem possible.  Also, if it were, why only in the 6+1 condition?

Looks like I have another problem.  Just noticed this evening that I have one of the rare slides that forms a crack at the back end of the slide groove.  I have been on the lookout for it all along and it just started during today’s range session.  I know the factory will correct it but it is an annoyance to ship.  (Did I just hijack my own thread?)  I will be sure to mention the latch problem in case there is something the factory can do to correct that as well.

Craigt.  Thanks for letting us know.  Keep us posted.  Thanks again.

Mid 2005 is about my vintage where I had a lot of problems prior to the slide crack and a factory slide replacement. There was something going on during this time other than "bad bar stock" and that is the basis for my suggestion to buy a new one given the choice on a new purchase. The slide replacement fixed everything.

kjtrains, your links to past threads were quite helpful.  Thanks for those.  A little trip back to the factory and she will be better than new.

Exactly.  Customer Service at Rohrbaugh is beyond reproach.

call Maria at Rorbaugh late next week, after they get back from the SHOT SHOW and tell her about the problem. May be a weak mag catch spring.   Tom

I keep forgetting about the SHOT Show.  Looks like it will be a couple of weeks before I will be able to talk with the factory.  Ah well.

I called Maria today and of course will be sending my R9S back to the factory for repair.  I have the option to upgrade to a Stealth slide for about $50. if I want.  I prefer the standard bead-blast stainless finish, however, is the friction reducing properties of the Stealth significant enough to warrant my consideration?  The sharp corners of my bead-blast slide are beginning to show a little bit of  polish.  How long will it take for the Titan Kote C12 to wear through at the sharp corners?

I presume I could also get a slide with no sights instead of one with sights as I now have.  I have often thought that the sight picture might be superior without the sights but have never been able to hold one and try it out.  I recall some side by side comparison photos of the R9 and R9S but have not been able to find them.  Any thoughts on sights vs no sights?

Oh, and they will address the magazine dropping problem as well.

As always, your expertise and input is very much appreciated.

(I feel half naked already just thinking about my R9 being away from home!)

Craig.  I, too, like the stainless finish slide the best.  As to the friction reducing properities of the Stealth I would have to defer to someone else's knowledge on this.

Just my preference, I like the sights better, but that's just me.  I know the sights are not used, except to sight in, but I just like the look better.  I thinks it's each ones' own decision.

Great that the R9 is being taken care of.  Excellent.

I have noticed that in the last few years my eyes have not been able to focus at all on the front sight.  It is just a blur (can't tip my head up to use the bi-focals) so I am just wondering if aligning the "big" profile of the slide might actually be better, faster and more accurate.

I haven't thought of it that way, and the larger profile of the slide may help.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

After much thought I have decided to go with the bead-blast (standard) finish and no sights.  No responses on the value of the Titan Kote so I assume it is not a great benefit.

Will ship it this afternoon.  Not sure how long it will take so I will just have to sit tight.  And read the forum.  A lot...

Thanks for the words of encouragement.  It has been back at the factory for a little over a week.  I have every confidence it will be made right.  No worries.

Just hard waiting...

Ooo, Ooo, got the call from Maria today!  The slide has been replaced with a sightless one.  The answering machine message was a little hard to hear but something about the "lower end", maybe replaced the hammer spring?  They ran several mags through with 100% function.  Should be here Thursday.

CraigT,
When you find out for sure, would you please confirm the hammer spring replacement ?

Craig.  Great news!  Let us know how it performs.  Thanks.

Because of the impending show storm UPS delivered it yesterday evening.  Looks good with a new slide (but it looked good with the original slide too).  I think I will like the sightless slide but final decision will wait until I get to the range.

I was able to talk with Maria yesterday and she confirmed that the hammer spring was also replaced.  (Stop reading here if you need political correctness: Maria is a real sweetheart, a very sharp one.)

A hand written note from Eric was included.  Apparently he rebuilt it himself.

Once I get to the range, hopefully this weekend (would be tonight if it wasn't snowing, GRRRRRR!!) I will let you all know how it functioned.

Just got back from the range.  See me smiling?

(This maybe should be in the Range Reports section but for continuity I am continuing the thread.)

(all mags are 6+1)
6 mags Speer Gold Dot 115gr:  100%
6 mags Speer Gold Dot 124 gr:  100%
1 mag Remington Golden Saber 147gr:  one failure to fire, gave it 3 tries then removed that round, the other 6 rounds fired and cycled 100%.  The primer showed sufficient indent so I do not think it was a light strike.  Anyone have any problems with Golden Sabers?

With the new parts it was noticeably tight when cycling the slide by hand. It did loosen up by the end of the session.

If you recall from earlier in this thread, I elected to have the replacement slide with no sights.  I did not miss the sights and in fact I  believe the sight picture is much better without.  My groupings were a bit better than with the sights though I will need to pull out my old targets to compare to verify this.

No hints of mag dropping.  The latch did require more force to release the mag than before the factory work.  For anyone having problems with mags dropping, CALL MARIA.  She told me that she is able to talk most people through the problem by correcting their grip.  Any others can be fixed by the factory.

I have not decided yet if I will start carrying it now or if I want another range session before trusting it.

Craigt,
I thought I saw a smile!!

Sounds like a good start on the new parts!!

IMO, I would shoot at least 50 rounds of your carry ammo to make sure all is well, and I believe you have achieved close to that-wow 100 rounds in an outing is a bit more than I care to do in my pup shooting these days!! I am proud of you!!

As far as the Remington primer issue, they have been known to be a bit harder than other brands in the past-this may be the answer?

Sighted vs Sightless issue,I have not compared the Pup with this, but do own Seecamps, and it has not been an issue with them!!

The general consensus has been that the sights do no harm, and "may" help with a bit longer shot if needed..
But,as we know, the Pup is meant for "closer" use..

Thank you for the report!!

Craig.  Thanks for the update.  You'll figure out the sighting.  Glad your R9 is home.

Oh wow, I can’t believe it has been this long since last shooting the R9.  Sorry for the long delay.

First off, I need to correct my last post.  I did not shoot 91 rounds in one range session.  Ouch.  I must have been so giddy that there were no failures…  Here is what I really shot:

3 mags Speer Gold Dot 115gr
3 mags Speer Gold Dot 124 gr
1 mag Remington Golden Saber 147gr

As for the range session 2 nights ago, 41 rounds, zero failures (Speer Gold Dot 115gr & 124 gr).  Now it has a total of 89 (or 92 if I include the 3 that the factory shot) rounds since returning from the factory with no failures (one bad primer).  I now, for the first time, feel comfortable carrying it.

Before this last range session, I thoroughly cleaned it and used Eezox dry lube instead of the grease and oil I had been using.  It seemed to work perfectly.  Eezox will be my new lube (smells a lot better than Ballistol!).

Yep, that is another smile.

Craig.  Great to hear of your last range session.  Amazing what a good range outing will do for one's ego and I mean that in a good way.

Good stuff, that Eezox and I like the smell too.  Wife doesn't even mind me cleaning guns now.    :)
