I've read numerous posts and it seems that everyone's R9's are digesting quite a variety of ammo.
What's everyone carying and why? My mags are filled with Hornady Critical defense loads right now.
I'm new to this forum but not firearms and shooting. Why are so many referring to the R9 as 'pup'.

The name pup was given by one of the members several years ago. I'm sure someone can post a link to it.
As to the Critical Defense ammo there have been a couple of threads on them and some people had problems with them in there pups.
I use Winchester Rangers or Speere Gold Dots for my carry ammo.

CB. The name pup was coined by RSCarry in 2004 a member and a Moderator here on the Forum, who has contributed more info to the Forum beyond what my words can describe; here's one of his posts.
On the Critical Defense, do see the other threads as John suggests.
I use Winchester Silvertips, 115 gr, however, with the newly acquired factory Robar, it has no diet.
Thx Duane .... I think this is a timely measure, and all power to ya for kickin it off. Over time I think this will grow considerably and give R9 owners somewhere to hang out.
I feel like one of the ''fortunate few'' thus far ... having now had mine a coupla weeks .... it is a joy to own.
Because there are those still anxious to learn more about this pup ... let me (again!) post a link to my range report and ammo comparison ..

If it helps answer any questions then it will have been worth doing.

Go to the range report section and go to the Hornady CD thread. I really think the CD's are probably OK but I get strange looking primer hits.
Let us know what yor results are. It could just be my R9 as it is chambered to the long end of the tolerances.

Mine hasn't hesitated on anything I've tried, and I've been carrying gold dots 115 grain.

Speer Gold Dots
Remington Golden Sabres

I endorse the foregoing remarks of my distinguished Forum colleague. 8)

My carry ammo is Speer Gold Dots 124 gr

Thanks for all the reports. I have about 115 rounds through the R9 w/o any issues. 50 rounds were Speer Gold Dot from another department member when I ran it through our qualification course. The rest were FMJ's. I have yet to snap a Hornady CD but will soon.

Speer Gold Dots
Remington Golden Sabres
I carry Golden Sabres in my .45. They shoot well from my R9, but an old thread on this forum suggested that the 9mm Sabres didn't open up as well on test material at usual pup shooting distance. I've been afraid to carry them since then. Comments?
-
I'm not into buying ballistic gelatin. The short barrel probably leads to lower velocity therefore less expansion. Speer Gold dot is marketing a new .22 mag round designed to stay together for deeper penetration out of short barreled guns. I'll probably buy a box of Gold Dot on my next visit to the gun store. hopefully the 9mm has similar characteristics.

I would be open to any info on the matter.
However, I find it difficult to believe that Remington would release them if there was a problem.
Or- are you saying, that the problem is just in short barreled guns or R9's ?

This was on a thread on this forum not too long ago on range reports when someone did some testing on newspapers bound together if I remember correctly. Testing was from an R9. Some of the sabres deformed strangely, didn't expand, etc. if I remember correctly. It was enough that I quit using them in the R9 in favor of the gold dots.
-
Interesting...
I guess it's a shorty prob ?
-
That was the implication. Of course, bound newspapers make a nice barrier, but are not remotely the consistency of ballistic gelatin, so the comparison may well be invalid anyway.

Interesting results for sure.
Just wonder how 147 Hydra shoks would do as well as 147 Golden Sabres though.
Anybody's guess for sure.
Thanks Rich!

Thanks Richard, that was the one.

See my post from last night under "range reports." Had multiple failures to fire due to hard primers WITH GOLDEN SABRES. Not sure how old the box was...could have been 5 years but suspect much less. These occurred in my new Covert but I then switched to my older R9S and experienced the same problem. If you wish to carry Sabres, would recommend firing part of the box through your R9 to be sure about the primers.

Thanks for the heads up.
I will do a function check with my new batch.
