Title: Newbe Question: Model 9 w/ serial #R(1700's).
Post by: cargaritaville on February 24, 2013, 02:53:11 PM
I just purchased a used(LNIB) Model 9 with a serial # in the 1700's. I would assume that this is an earlier version. Does it need to go back to the factory for anything? It has only been fired once when new at the factory. Thanks.

Many of our members have much earlier s/ns without any trip back to the factory. There are some internal upgrades, etc., that they would perform but if I were you I would take it straight to the range and check it out with the proper ammo, of course.

Thanks for the quick and informative reply. Your favorite range ammo and favorite carry ammo? Thanks.

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on acquiring the finest pocket pistol yet designed.

What Tracker said.

Ammo:  Many of the members around here favor the Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Silver Tip ammunition in 115-grain loads. A few of us also like  the 124- or 147-grain Remington Golden Sabers. Just avoid any +P ammo and see what your R9 likes to be fed.

Good luck, and range reports are encouraged.   8)

As to range ammo there has been some consensus toward Speer Lawman and Winchester White Box, in that order but in today's limited supplies it would be about whatever decent ammo one could find available.

May I recommend a very thorough cleaning of the entire firearm internally with any of the better known cleaners without lubricant. Then clean the outside, including grips, with Simple Green. Once everything is clean and dry, lubricate and "season" the entire firearm, except the grips, with Frog Lube. The instructions are on YouTube. Once properly cleaned and lubed, I found my R9 will fire reliably with just about any major producer 9mm white box ammo. The Frog Lube makes it really easy to clean, smells good, and won't require latex gloves because it is gentle on your hands. For carry, I prefer GD 124's. Good luck. :D
