Title: Boberg or P226?
Post by: dddonkey on August 22, 2013, 09:51:00 PM
I have a question for all you experts out there. I was on the waiting list to get a Boberg shorty but when it came my time to order I had just received my R9 and could not swing it. Now that I have the funds available I am considering ordering one again or getting a Sig 226 MK25 (comes with 3 mags). I have a few small weapons and love my R9, it goes everywhere with me for the most part except work (military base). If you could only have one what would you choose and why, if you don’t mind. I have shot a P226 and really like it but have not held or fired a Boberg (not really a big deal, I can always sell it). I know that the two weapons are two different extremes but I am asking, and if you have both please chime in. Thanks for any info.

ddonkey, I don't pretend to be an expert but will offer my opinion.  I have two R9's, a Boberg shorty and a Boberg XR9L.  The Bobergs are a pleasure to shoot, a unique engineering feat and, as with all highly engineered pistols, ammo sensitive.  They are comfortable with +P ammo and are quite accurate.  I have fun with mine at the range, but do not carry either one...reasons:
1.  The shorty is not much smaller, tho somewhat thinner, than my Kimber Ultra CDPII in .45, which I carry when clothing/season permits, altho the R9 is my usual daily carry most of the year.  Sights on the Boberg are much better, and accuracy is better at a longer range than the Rohrbaugh, and the recoil is much less vigorous, but my likely use for self-defense will be point and shoot in a CQB arena if ever that occurs and the R9 is simply the most comfortable carry 9mm for me IWB, OWB, or most often in my front pocket with a DeSantis Superfly holster with the flat pad velcro'd on when the pocket is large as in cargo pockets in shorts, or when worn in a back pocket.

2.  The XR9L is a beautiful piece in Platinum edition, and really fun to shoot also, but I can get a higher caliber for the size...It would be a really good carry piece for some, but the size is such that I just don't carry it.

3.  Although billed as a "pocket pistol" the shorty is not, IMO, a real pocket pistol...just marginally too large for my 5' 11" frame I guess.

4.  The Bobergs throw a vigorous ejected shell casing which has a tendency to nail the shooter in the forehead depending on stance and grip...best wear glasses!

comparing the Boberg to a Sig is not Fair to the Boberg. Sig-Sauer is a World Class Firearms Company. The Mk-25 is an Excellent Weapon that you will probably never see fail under Normal or extreme use. As I have said in another thread, my P-228 is 20 years old and has had thousands of rounds run through it. I never have a doubt it will fire and I have not even done so much as replace a recoil spring. Sigs are designed for extreme use. I have several Sigs in my collection and have a 516 AR on order.  Boberg sounds like a very interesting weapon but is somewhat of a Niche Weapon where as the Sig is General Purpose. So it kind of boils down to what you are searching for. If you are looking for something to use for pretty much everything I would go with the Sig. If you are looking for another small gun with interesting qualities and very unusual then it would be the Boberg.
I Like the Boberg, but just like my Rohrbaughs, it has limitations that must be recognized.

Thanks for the input, I am leaning toward the P226, I really want a Boberg but think that I can get more range use out of the Sig.

Given the choice between the Boberg & the Sig I would have go with the Sig, how can you argue with "To hell and back reliability"  ;D
I recently got a Sig P224 in 9mm very nice gun. I'm waiting for Ryan (R Grizzle Leather) to get my holster finished for it.

I'll steer this back on track and say Boberg.  Love the S and have a matching L arriving in a week or so.  If I was smart, and didn't review guns as a hobby, I would sell all the other small/midsize and stick with these two.

I've owned one Sig and was less than impressed by the 938.  I still own it, but I've not removed it from the shipping box since it came back from service the 3rd time.  I am going to give a 224 a try, but SAS 357 Sig for me please.  Looks like another 3 to 6 months wait until the 224 357 is available.   If the 224 is problematic like the 938, there will be no more Sig purchasing.  I'm hoping I can trade the 938 on my way to the 224.

I had to go into the wayback machine to find this from January.  Pretty much sums up how I felt about the XR9-L after finishing up my review.

As far as range use goes, the L is fun on the range too.

But if you want a 226, then by all means get what you want.   ;D
