Title: R9s is repaired and ready to go.
Post by: MikeInTexas on November 15, 2016, 10:24:45 AM
Follow up to the other thread regarding the injured R9 on Gunbroker.

FFL got the pistol yesterday and I was able to pick up with no issues.

When I got home and checked the mail, the package from Eric with the replacement slide had arrived.
(Many thanks to Eric for his generosity in helping me get this worked out.)

Started by removing the slide from the frame.

The take down pin was real tight, took a punch and hammer to get it out.

The rails on the frame looked almost brand new, as did the two magazines.

The bore is clean and shiny.

I don't think this gun has been fired much at all.  My other one is a lot more broken in than this one with less than 200 rounds down the pipe.

The frame to new slide fit was a little stiff at first, but some gun grease on the rails slicked it right up.  Worked the slide back and forth a dozen or so times and it got to feeling smooth.  No wobble or extra play.

Assembled it with the barrel and springs and it looks like it will be good to go.  The fit and finish match perfectly.

I did not disassemble it any further or take the grips off.  The screws seem a big buggered up and did not want to do any more damage.  After I shoot it, may do a deep clean on it if needed.

I am planning a trip to the woods at the end of the week, so it will get a couple of magazines through it then.  I will post a follow up on that as well.  This will be my first time shooting one with sights.

Ok, for the pictures.  You can see the slide is cracked significantly and all the way through.

Both sides have cracks.

Any ideas what would have caused this with such a low round count?  +p loads?  Hot hand loads?

The issue of cracking slides was handled immediately once we saw a problem. We had a number of them come back, but nothing more than any other manufacturer has with their products also. It's mechanical, they can break. Period. We narrowed it down to two things: a questionable "mill run" purchase and heat treat was just at the "top-end" of being "kicked back". Very quickly that issue was resolved and we moved forward. Glad this slide, which I made for myself and was keeping for my own R9s should the need arise, I gladly gave to Michael as that was my offer here. While I did forget the offer initially, all worked out quite well and I even received a very fancy pecan pie from a "Haughty Taughty" company in Texas as a "Thank You"! Thank you Michael for the pie. . . . We intend to use it this coming Thanksgiving as one of the deserts with our family! You're a good man McGee! lol. Enjoy your R9!

Regards,

Eric C. Rohrbaugh

'Haughty Taughty', LOL.  That kind of good stuff is just normal eats around here.

I am pretty sure Tattoo and a few of other Houston area members have had a slice of Goode Company black bottom pecan pie after a good barbecue dinner or over a cup of coffee the next morning.
(Make sure you stash yourself a piece of that away for breakfast.)

Glad a taste of Texas will be on a Yankee dinner table at Thanksgiving this year.   ;D

Many thanks,

.

The gun shoots great.  I was only able to get a dozen rounds of FMJ shot today, but they were flawless.  Both magazines worked perfectly.

I need to get a fuller box of self defense ammo and run through it before I start carrying it.

Also I want to take it out to an range with paper targets and see how it accurate I am with it at a known distance.  Was only able to shoot it at a informal target yesterday, not much more than a function check.

Getting interested to see how much the sights help at about 7-10 yards.

Overall really impressed with the pistol.

There are several versions of the black bottom pie but this may be the version Mike is referring to from the venerable Goode Company Barbecue in Houston. Please correct me if i am wrong.  ;D http://www.goodecompany.com/brazos-bottom-pecan-pie-in-wooden-box.asp
