Leroy Thompson shoots the R9S Stealth
« on: January 23, 2008, 12:13:11 AM »
The other day I came across an on-line gun magazine, http://www.gunblast.com .  They had some interesting articles.
I checked the archives and found a piece by Leroy Thompson dated September 2007. http://www.gunblast.com/LT_Rohrbaugh.htm
Thompson wrung out a R9S Stealth pretty thoroughly. He apparently fired 100+ rounds without any issues.  Then he said, "I have not disassembled the Rohrbaugh yet because I want to keep shooting it without cleaning it until I’ve put 300+ rounds through it to see if it will function reliably that entire time without cleaning.  Disassembly is fairly easy, however. One just has to drop the magazine, clear the pistol, then hold the slide back while pushing out the cross pin."
He's gonna need a "Stop-Stick", I think.
He's also under the impression the recoil spring is good for 500 rounds.
I haven't seen a follow-up article yet, but will keep looking.

What dual recoil spring? Did something change?

Tracker:

None of which I am aware. Anyway, he did admit that he hadn't yet disassembled his R9 and didn't intend to do so until he had pushed 300 rounds through it.  :o  Perhaps he's confusing the R9 with the Seecamp LWS-32 and the Kahr PM9 which he uses for size comparison and which both employ dual recoil springs.

As for that plan to push 300 rounds through the R9 (the design of which is already well proven) without disassembly and maintenance, I just don't understand it. I've never felt the need or desire to put any of my own handguns through a private version of the XM9 trials. To me, "torture testing" a proven handgun design would be comparable to buying a fine sports car and then deliberately seeing how long I could redline it. Oh, well . . . it's his gun. He's entitled to treat it any way he wants.

I think Thompson's referring to the buffer spring that's integral with the guide rod as the 'second' recoil spring.
It's been 4 months since the original article.  Maybe he broke the gun trying to get it apart or back together ???

Steve is right. Mea culpa! I went back and read the Thompson article more carefully. He refers to a "dual recoil spring system" [emphasis added] rather than a "dual recoil spring." When I think of a dual recoil spring I think of a spring such as that used in the Seecamp. And upon reflection, I think the recoil asembly of the PM9 is closer to that of the R9 than it is to that of the Seecamp.

I apologize.

(I think I need a good strong drink.   :-/)
