Observation and Opinions
« on: June 17, 2006, 11:36:23 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have been reading some older and newer posts and have come to a conclusion or two.  It seems to me that some are sending their gun back to Rohrbaugh way to quickly.  I think it needs to be stressed more that this gun absolutly requires you find the ammo that YOUR particular gun likes(mine likes the Silvertips not the GDHP) and that this gun definately seems to require a break in.   By break in I mean at least three boxes(50 rds per box).   Shoot a box, even if it jams a lot(mine did) clean thouroghly and relub then shoot another box, etc.

Next item.  I am haveing trouble finding Silvertips locally but I have 1 new box and am going for my third range trip tomorrow(if it isn't raining).  Tomorrow will be the real test.  If I have no further jam problems using the Silvertips, as was the indications I got from the last part of my previous range trip,  I will be confident using the R9s for my carry gun.  Wish me luck gang!

On another note.  I don't like the looks of the  to be released "Stealth" R9.  Since it has to be concealed anyway, I prefer the way my R9 looks.  Mine is a thing of beauty and a real piece of what I like to call "industrial art".  I also consider the B-58 Hustler an outstanding example of what "industrial art" is.   The B-58 and the R9 simply have to be seen up close and touched to be appreciated.

Nice post Riff.  If you shoot Silvertips and they work fine go with them.  I would say do a box of Silvertips - then try some GDHP 115 gr. - there is possibility you may be surprised.

As far as break in - I just shot my new 1911 Kimber for the first time today.  The owners manual says to shoot a 500 round break in - it will be awhile before that happens.

But as you say is true that some will be concerned if their R9 has some FTF on the first 50 rounds and maybe some more break in will work with a different ammo.  Both the Winchester Silvertips and GDHP 115 gr. work fine in mine.

I've had only one FTF when I held the R9 as loose as possible on purpose without it flying out of my hand.  I wanted to see how far I could go in limp wristing before getting a FTF.

The stealth version is the one I ordered.  Tastes vary in guns like they do women and horses.

Part of my reason is the black sights.  I figure they are less likely to reflect light, and with some phosphorescent paint to put some dots on the sight, I should get nice contrast under a wide variety of light conditions.

I can't help but wonder if the B-58 kicked off the whole UFO craze in the 1950's when this aircraft was being developed at tested at Area 51.  The bottom/top view sure looks like some of the early pictures folks reported.

Interesting observation Riff.  I've wondered if the UFO I saw years ago (also seen by the state police) was an experimental secret craft.   Then of course it wouldn't be as fun.

Riff, I was in a B58. I was in Air Force ROTC in college and we made a base visit to Ft Carswell in Ft. Worth, Texas. This was in the 60's and there they had them on the flight line and in hangers. Even in the hanger I thought I was going over mach one.

The only B-58 that I know of that is still intact is in the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Field in Ohio.  IF ANYONE EVER GETS THE CHANCE TO SEE THIS MUSEUM YOU MUST GO.  It in a word it is AWESOME.  Words cannot describe how much fun you will have if you go.  In many ways it is even better than the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in D.C.  The Smith doesn't have a B-36!  They also have German and British aircraft.  You will need one entire day to see everything.  If you go it will be something you remember the rest of your life and say to yourself, I am sure glad I went there.
Sorry to drift so far off topic.

Attached link to the Lone Star Museum in Galveston
with a B-58 on static display in addition to many other
beauties; most are flyers.

Tom, a few years ago, there was a WWII reinactment. They did a beach landing with ducks & etc. Later that evening there was a party with the bar under the B58. Alot of the guns used during the day where bought from me ie: Brownings 30 and 50, Tommy guns, Stens & etc.
