Hello All, Brand New Member here! I just picked up a very gentely used R9s from a local Lawyer up here in Motown. He had bought it for his wife, but after putting one box (20 rounds) down the pipe, she decided that the little pup had too much bark for her. Anyway, I am now the proud owner of #631, and can't wait to get to the range to see what this guy can do. Also...in some past posts I have read about some cracked slides...Can anyone give me some more details on this? Do I have call for concern? Can this be avoided?
Please Advise. Thanks.

mshechte:

First, allow me to welcome you to the Forum.

My suggestion would be that, if you have not already done so, you read through Chris' FAQ site and then clean and lube the R9 in preparation for your first range session with it. Here are links to the FAQ site and to a thread on some tools which simplify the takedown/reassembly process:

http://www.acbsystems.com/boards/rohrbaugh/

http://www.rohrbaughforum.com/YaBB.cgi?board=Cleaning;action=display;num=1165943631

I would then load the pistol with some of the recommended ammunition and plan to run 50 or 60 rounds through it at the first session -- giving it time to cool down a bit every couple of magazines or so.

The cracked-slide problem was traced to a small batch of defective barstock. According to my informal count, there have been only about 8 reports of cracked slides out of the 2,000+ R9s produced. All of them have involved hairline cracks at the thin area at the back of the slide, none of them becoming catastrophic failures. In the unlikely event that your pistol does develop a cracked slide, the factory will make it right in short order.

The R9 is a revolutionary pistol.  Good luck with yours!

Welcome, I've had very good results with 124gr or 115gr GDHP ammo.

Thanks for all of the input fellas. I've already stripped and scrubbed the pup and lubed as per instructions. Pretty easy to break down, and found no wear whatsoever. Not too comfortable with the whole Chanell Lock thing though...there has to be a better way. But until then I'll keep a pair on my bench. Will stick with the recommended ammo as well. I have always had good results with GDJHP and use it in all my carry guns. I'll post a range report as soon as I can.

I got the pup to the range today for the first time. All I can say is WOW. A Colt Pocket Nine has been my constant companion for almost five years now and I thought I liked it. I had a trigger job done on the Colt some time back, and thought that was as good as it gets...Boy was I wrong. That R9 has to have the smoothest double action trigger that I've ever pulled. Recoil was just as sharp as my 340 PD as to be expected, but way more pleasent to shoot. I burned up 50 rounds of WWB, and 20 rounds of GDHP 124gr in my tiime at the range and with the exception of a couple FTF's that I attributed to only one Mag (the other two functioned flawlessly) I am very impressed. I will call the company to order some new Mag springs and a new recoil spring ASAP. Anyway I found myself placing 4 inch groups at 25 feet. I am a believer!

It would appear that you and your "pocket rocket" are going to get along just fine!  I've already welcomed you to the Forum.  Now I can welcome you to "COSRO" -- the Club of Satisfied Rohrbaugh Owners.   8)
