Ok I realize they don't need batteries, but my question is, will a contact shot take the pup out of battery?

It seems that it will fire in situations other semi autos will not.

I'm not sure what you are getting at?  The R-9 can be pushed out of battery like any other semi-auto...

Try it,  it does not react like any semi I have had.  I can pull back on the slide and dry fire?
