Roger's shooting school
« on: May 30, 2007, 10:10:11 PM »
Hey guys,
I just got back this past weekend from attending the Roger's Shooting School.  Man what a week.  We shot about 500 rounds a day for a grand total of around 2500 rounds (so I don't recommend the R9 for this  ;D).  If you haven't heard of the Roger's Shooting School, do a Google search and check out there web site.

They use computer controlled pneumatic steel targets that are only available to shoot for a small amount of time before they disappear.  A little stressful at times, but what a blast.  The whole school is formed around Bill Roger's theory of reactive shooting.  He says it takes about 0.25 seconds to recognize a threat and another 0.25 seconds to get on target and break the shot.  You are mostly shooting at head size targets up to 20 yards away under this time constraint.  Not impossible I found out, but not easy either.

The days consist of different drills to get you used to the speed of the targets, they start fast and don't get any slower.  You practice working the trigger, focusing on the front site, and following through.  Then each day you take a test which consists of 9 seperate drills.  Sometimes you are at a low ready and sometimes holstered.  Sometimes you must do all shooting and reloading strong hand and sometimes weak hand only.  There are drills with two targets and some with all seven coming at you in waves of three, talk about fast and furious (not to mention fun).

The class was great.  Excellent instructors.  Light on tactics, but that isn't what it is about.  It is about getting shots on target quickly and accurately.  I started out useing my Sig 229 DAK but quickly found that the long smooth trigger pull wasn't working for me.  I just couldn't get the feel of working the trigger out to the target.  So, I switched out to my M&P which helped out immensely.

I stayed at the lodge associated with the school and had a bed and meals for only $75 bucks for the entire week!  The food was excellent.  Plenty of it and home cooked.  Roast chicken, pork chops, chicken pot pie, and spaghetti to name a few.  The beds were bunks, six to a room with two showers, two johns and two sinks.  There was a fridge for water and "spirits".  A couple of couches and a fire place.  All set in the mountains of north GA.  A nice picturesque setting, especially coming from S. Florida where the only topography we get are landfills. It was a mixed bag of people attending including; cops form Florida and California, a UN security force member, an employee of Triple Canopy, and several regular folks including me.  I know my shooting improved and I will be back again next year in my quest for that advanced rating.  Highly recommended.

Interesting report.  It sounds like excellent training. Since it's just down the Interstate, I'm going to look into it.  Thanks!

Sounds great, Roc.  A friend of mine was there at the same time I think -- Fred, a doc from Florida?

If any of you are interested in reading about the Roger's shooting school, there is a good article in the latest issue of SWAT.
