To Scared To take the Grip Screws out
« on: August 22, 2005, 10:29:24 PM »
I field stripped the R9 a little while ago. Not that bad at all, yeah at one point I felt I needed a third hand, but worked through it.

I could not get the grip screws out. I was putting a bit to much torque on the hex wrench, and as I watched that flex, the screw never moved. I was waiting for that "click" sound signaling that the screw broke free.If I continued the pressure, the screw head may have stripped, or the wrench would have broken.

Any others have a problem, or chicken out before the Hex screw loosened up?

I didn't see a need to take the grip panel off at this point because I haven't shot the R9,but after some range time, I would like to inspect the trigger bar, and clean it.

Ohh, the inners of the R9 looks like the movement of a Swiss watch.

chameleon:

Here is a prior discussion on grip screw removal which may be helpful:

After my experience, I ordered a supply of spare grip screws from the factory.  I haven't stripped another one yet, but it's good to have some on hand just in case I do.

Ahh, thanks Richard.
I think I will order extra screws and springs and mags.

I know I saw a story on someone stripping the grip screws, and I thank you for giving me the link to it.

I've mentioned this on several threads probably but will repeat - it is important to use a good quality hex wrench - a true 1/16" - 0.0625" - as a cheapie which may be a thou or more undersize will mar the screw too easily.

A well fitting wrench should allow for good leverage and the ability to ''snick'' that lil' bit extra to break the threadlock bond.  As most can realize - once the hex in the screw head becomes a bit distorted then it can all go downhill from there!

Thanks Chris.
You know before my R9 came in, I tried to read all these posts about everything on the R9.
Now I am going back and trying to read them all again.
