NATO ammo?
« on: September 23, 2005, 01:06:14 PM »
I thought of the question of using NATO-spec (cross-in-circle headstamp) 9mm ammo in the Rohrbaugh.

It's not "+P", but then, NATO and other European ammo isn't SAAMI-rated.
I've shot quite a bit of this in other 9mm guns, mostly 124gr, and not found it to be particulary "hot", and wondered if anyone else had thought of this or used it, and with what results?

I'm reluctant to use it in the Rohrbaugh since NATO spec bullets of 124gr usually go 1250fps or so from a 4.0" barrel, which certainly approximates the results with "+P" rounds made in the USA, but I don't know the CUP measures for NATO-spec vs. "+P" rounds, and maybe NATO-spec stuff is OK for practice?

Any ideas?

I would stay with Speer Gold Dot 115 and 124gr stuff.

SAWBONES,

Without any proof at the moment, many of us  think of NATO ammo as being higher pressure.

I like the Gold Dots, too.  The factory was very strong in their recommendation of standard pressure Gold Dots.  My initial testing was done with Gold Dots.  The factory knows best.

Of course, after verifying that the pistol is reliable, I certainly tried  another standard round for suitability.

For example, I learned that Winchester Ranger 147gr is reliable in my pistol.  It is presently being carried.

I've read the heck out of all the bulletin boards, and feel that the most highly regarded rounds, most often mentioned for carry,  are:

Win Ranger LEO
Gold Dots
Remington Sabers

Of course, there are varying opinions. :)

My box of 9mm NATO says that it's a higher pressure round only suited to +P guns...

I have a lot of 9mm NATO military ammo I buy from Ammoman.com, which I believe is contract overrun and such.  This stuff is very hot.  I would not want to put it into my R9.

Agreed re NATO stuff - and IIRC also Hirtenberger.

One comment often made with some older semi's is - they will take modern +P because they were made to use military ammo - which is almost definitely hotter and probably deserving of +P designation.

The R9 is so new that it cannot include mil ammo, it's parameters being based on modern std pressure stuff.

I have said before - I would not be surprised if the pup could happlily take quite a lot of hot ammo but - in the process I think we would beat it up - but not actually create a failure all that easily.

Frankly, for me, an extra 50 fps is not worth gaining, to risk compromizing the gun.
