How reliable are these guns???
« on: January 13, 2007, 02:15:18 AM »
Hello, I am looking for a new CCW. I am looking at a few different guns including the R-9. I have not seen, held or fired one of these guns. How reliable are they?

As you can see this is my first post. What is the difference between the R-9 and R-9s? Thanks very much for your time and info.

Hi lhgdale, and welcome to the forum.

The R9 s has sights.  While small and fixed, they are quite functional.
After reading through various posts here you will find some mixed reviews on reliability.  But, we are talking about a crowd that expects perfection.
It seems the majority of problems are solved by proper cleaning/maintainence with either changing out the recoil spring every 100 rounds and /or switching over to the new "power" magazine springs as well.
Proper lubing tends to be more important in these guns than most.
And of course some guns tend to prefer certain ammo over others.  My gun will take anything you give it.

From all what I have heard, the factory will do the right thing if something is wrong.
I'm sure I left something out, but some other members will fill in the blanks for me.

As far as a CCW -  you are getting the most concealable power/firepower in the smallest, high - quality package available.  You can't beat it !  At least at this time.

Hope this helps, and again, welcome to the forum.

:) Recommended highly. The most concealable full power 9mm semi-auto made. A joy to own and a gun to have confidence in when you need protection and full concealment is necessary.

You will find that the gun is great and a joy to carry in 9mm. However, a small number of guns have had problems, Rohrbaugh took care of those. Take the plunge and get one.   Tom

lhgdale:

Welcome to the Forum.

The previous comments were made by gentlemen who know whereof they speak.  As for my own R9s, it has proven itself to be fully reliable.  I trust it completely.

Ihgdale

I was one of the people who had problems.I was lucky though because my pistol would reliably malfunction. In that condition there was no question that it could not be used for its intended purpose.
The factory service was excellent and with a magazine spring change the pistol has since functioned perfectly.
The warranty is cradle to grave;but only to the original purchaser. If I were you I would only purchase a pistol that was new or lightly used and came with  the blank warranty card  (one not yet registered). That way if there should be any problem, you are the registered owner and the pistol is covered by the factory warranty.
The dark side not usually written about is what happend to the pistols that did malfunction and the problem never corrected ?  That would concern me about purchasing a used R9,like a used car, buying some one elses'problem.
In my opinion the gold standard for the R9 is the ability  to reliably shoot  hollow point defensive ammo.R9's can be some what ammo sensitive, but finding the loading that you and the gun are comfortable with  can be fun and part of the bonding process.Knowing your limits and the limits of your weapon is valuable information.
Would I buy the R9 again?   Yes
Would I buy this gun with out the factory warranty?   No
