Folding Knife

I could use a little help in selecting a folding tactical knife.  What I want it for is, ah, well, hmm, ok I’ll just say it, but don’t laugh, to take into the hot tub with me.  You did laugh didn’t you?  The hot tub is in the back yard and faces a 23 acre woods.  I just feel a bit naked out there, other than actually being almost naked, with no weapon of any kind.

I have a very cheep one that someone gave me years ago when it came as a freebee when he ordered a good one.  I clip it in my swim suit pocket so it is with me in the hot tub.  The blade shows no sign of rust at all but the aluminum handle has been severely corroding recently.  It would need to be made of materials that could handle being soaked and quickly dried off but I don’t want to have to fuss over it.

Any suggestions on brands, models, features, etc?

Craigt.  The Sportsmans' Guide. com should have what you're looking for.  Here's a link and you can have a look.  They used to have a S & W spring assist, but don't see that anymore.

If you have a flat surface by the tub I would post a Glock 17 there to dissuade intruders. I have an Insight Technology MX3 at 125 lumens attached to the under side of mine; it is quite bright.

Craigt.  I found the link that has a S & W spring assist.  Says, stainless steel, with aluminum handle.  Don't know if you want the spring assist.  This may rust, however.  Just thouht of that.

If you just want a knife I suggest a Spyderco H-1 that will not rust. I love these knives.

I've carried Spyderco daily for years.

Great Choice!

I'm sure others will chime in with good ones, just like favorite guns.  There's a lot of good ones out there.

Craigt,  The best knives in the world are made by Benchmade (IMHO).

I prefer their Axis lock mechanism.  It allows you to flick the blade open/closed while your thumb holds down a spring button.

Benchmade uses thicker oil impregnated bronze washers than other manufactures.  This extra thickness holds more oil and keeps the blade lubricated longer.  Other companies use the same lock, but don't have the thicker washers.

I have several of their knives and will never buy any other brand.  They also offer "lifesharp".  You ship the knife to them and they will sharpen it for free and return it to your for free.

Kanuist beat me to the punch but, that is what I mainly carry as well. Benchmade auto folders are tough to beat. After two trips to sandland...they take a lick'in and keep on flick'in..

I and my sons all carry the tiger claw, great service right from the owner by the way.

 I use the Bro clip to carry the knife upside down in my pocket.

I agree with Kanuist, Benchmade makes a great knife - and the Axis is the only way to go.  I have a handful of them.

The only downside is that they are about twice as thick compared to the Spyderco metal frame models.  

Not a big deal if you clip in your pocket, but the Spyderco is much more comfortable if you clip into your waistband (less bulk).

In addition to the tactical knife I am also on the lookout for a very rugged folding “survival” knife.  I would like a thick drop point blade about 4” long, preferably with a metal handle.  Something that would hold up to a lot of abuse.  

The Benchmade #610 has the thickest blade in their lineup but the handle is G-10, light & strong but not up to severe abuse.

Any thoughts most appreciated.
