Carrying extra magazines
« on: August 26, 2005, 11:53:15 PM »
In my short handling of the R9S at the gun store it did not strike me as a firearm that lends itself to reloads in a quick and effective manner.  If I remember correctly the magazine does not drop free, you must pull it out.  While its nice to have a reload  do folks think that this gun is intended to handle a running gun battle.   It strikes me as an effecive firearm for either back-up or in my case primary carry when the attire demands it.  Its decent defensive caliber easily concealed combined with good shot placement seems to be its forte.  Do folks carry spare mags when they use it.

cc1, welcome to the forum.  I hope you enjoy your visits here.

I purchased the magazine holder from Mr. Hedley when my holster was ordered for the R9S.

I'm still undecided about where to keep it, while carrying in the right front pocket.  There has been a temptation to put it under the holster bottom, but that doesn't sound very smart, for some reason.  Perhaps it could go in an unused rear pocket?

Away from the body, one good choice might be to put it in the glove box or unused ash tray.

Could someone tell about their solution for having extra ammo on the body?

Welcome to the Forum.

The last discussion around here of carrying a second magazine drifted off into another dimension altogether.  ;D   Staying on topic this time around, I carry a second magazine in my weak-side back pocket.  I keep it in one of RJ Hedley's mag pouches, and it is the only thing I carry in that pocket.  Like Brenden, I'm not too much concerned about a speed reload.  I just believe in carrying spare ammunition.

I like Brenden's idea about the left front pocket, except mine is loaded up with keys and coins, so the right side will be free.

Brenden, do you have the same problem?

I will probably follow Richard's example, and use the empty rear pocket.

I carry mine in a hedley mag pouch in my weak side front pocket.  My front strong side has the R9, I don't keep anything in strong rear side out of habit from IWB.  The weak rear gets the wallet.  So, that leaves the mag with the keys and knife in the weak front.  I figure it isn't the quickest of grabs, but either is getting the mag free of the pouch and reloading the R9 either so I don't worry about it.  If I need it it is there, but I doubt it will really matter as whatever trouble I got into will most likely be over with the first mag full.
