R9 Range Report
« on: September 25, 2005, 04:11:32 PM »
Well, went to the range today to warm up the brand new R9.  Started out OK, using Winchester WinClean BEB 124gr ammo.  Got 42 rounds perfect, nice groups from 3 to 7 yards no failures happy, happy, happy.   On the next 12 rounds had 2 "failure to feeds".  Slide was jammed open with the cartridge nosed up towards the barrel.  Did the standard tap and rack, and both corrected themselves and performed. Now I don't know if It was a weak grip or the ammo, so I changed to Speer gold dot 124gr.  Ran 20 rounds of that and had 1 FTF, with the same nose up not seated configuration, which corrected itself upon tap and rack.  I decided to call it a day, at least with the R9.  I'll strip it down clean and relube it, and try it again in a few days.

Moral of the story, I should have quit the first test after 42 rounds.  Now the gun was new out of the box, It was lubed, I saw the lube on it, so I will give the gun the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe it was grip induced, or maybe 40 clean rounds is the most you can expect without relubing it?

On the positive side the recoil was not as bad as I expected after reading the forum.  The trigger pull while long, is smooth, clean, and, easy.

cc1,

50 is the recommended amount between cleanings..

That said,being a new,"unbroken in" gun,you may experience a hiccup or two.. ;)

Most likely it got a bit dirty for ya,since you had no problems with your chosen ammo for 40!!

I have read of others shooting 100 rounds at a session w/o a problem, for me I try to stick pretty close to the 50 "rule"

Sounds like you had fun- 8)
