The serial numbers are applied as soon as the frame is created.  The number indicates the order of creation of the frame.  Frames are then pulled out for finishing.  Whenever your frame is attached to a gun and ready to go out the door, it goes.  Serial numbers have always been only an approximate indication of the shipping date of the gun.

This frame was probably at S&W for a while and is only now back and ready for sale.

I really like the look of the R9 Stealth & G-10 grips.  I've got a Spyderco "Military" model with a G-10 handle and it's absolutely indestructible.  Look's like I'll be holding off on a Rohrbaugh purchase a little longer ;)
