Black Hills 115gr EXP
« on: December 09, 2006, 08:30:45 PM »
Has anyone used this ammunition in their R9/R9S.  It's rated at 1250fps but is not listed to be +P just extra power ;D .  I originally bought this for my wife’s Kahr MK9 but think it might be a good round for the pup.  When I purchased this ammo they could still get gold dots.  My understanding is that they now load an XTP.  Here's a link if you're interested http://www.black-hills.com/factorynew.htm
I read the Triton warning and was worried this might fall into the same category.  However their +P offering is rated at 1300fps.  Thanks in advance. Brew

Brew:

First of all, welcome to the Forum.

I have not used the Black Hills 115 EXP ammunition in my R9.  I personally would be inclined to stick with proven fodder for the "pup," such as 124 or 115 grain Speer Gold Dots, until I was sure that the EXP was not loaded to +P pressures.  The R9 pushes the size/weight envelope for its caliber, and there's a reason for the warning against feeding it +Ps.

Good luck with your "pocket rocket."

Howdy -  Brew, I mirror Richard S' thoghts.  From your  post it seems you are only talking a difference of 50 fps between the two rounds in question.
Seems like splitting hairs to me at these kind of pressures.

I would not risk it myself, see no reason to.

I appreciate the replies and will take your advice.  I wasn't sure what the consensus would be and therefore decided to post the question.  Just to be clear, I already have 1000 rounds of this and it is loaded with the Speer 115gr. Gold Dot.  It was the hottest load my wife could handle in her MK9.  I've checked around and am fairly confident that it doesn't exceed the 35000 cup threshold.  The Winchester Silvertip is listed as 1225fps at the muzzle and Guns & Ammo list the 115gr @ 1250fps as a standard loading in non+P.  However after reading through this board, it appears that adding additional dynamics to an already complicated equation (perfect operation) is likely not advisable.  Thanks again. In the for-what-it's-worth category, with the powders currently out there, it is no great trick to exceed 1200, and in some cases even 1300 fps without going into the realm of +P with 115gr bullets.  Here is one site that lists such data

http://www.gunsworld.com/reload/reload_alliant_us.html

Alliant Power Pistol is known by the factories as Bullseye 84, and is used exensively by the ammo manufacturers for 9mm

Some of the Vitavouri powders appear to do even better!

Most likely Black Hills is using one of these
