Wringling It Out This Weekend
« on: January 24, 2007, 10:38:37 PM »
To finally, finally get myself 100% satisfied with my new R9 reliability and bullet choice, I am going to club this weekend and put it to the torture test. First, I bought 10 new recoil springs and have one new one on board. That's potentially eleven times 100 = a bunch of testing. Next, will take my time and let it cool. Last, will clean and lube after every 100 rounds fired. This should be the very final cozying up for me to the R9. So far, I hate Gold Dots and Hornady won't come close to working. On deck are WWB 115 and Golden Sabres. I think the Golden Sabres shoot "softer." Any other bullets I should try? Anyway, there's gonna be a heck of a lot of little gun shootin this weekend. Will let ya know what I think.

Howdy - Man that sounds like a well thought out plan.  And fun to.

At the risk of putting my foot in my mouth, I may have forgotten from a previous post, do you have a/some of the new "power" mag springs as well ?
I was just thinking, with all that time, energy and money going into the test, at least one mag should be a "power" mag to tighten in the results, i.e. solve some FTF,FTE.

Reinz,

I ordered two of those from Maria as well. I have been using the mag spring from my Kahr MK9 til now since it is a bit stouter and as far as I could see was the same animal. It worked anyway. I won't shoot all ten recoil springs worth but I'm gonna give it a pretty good range/torture test. One thing that nags me for example is the Golden Sabres. I had one feed failure out of 44 last time. One handed I got it to malf a couple more times. I'm not the biggest dude around but I am fairly fit and so don't think my grip is a problem. So, I am forgetting all I thought I had gathered as far as what to shoot and start over ('cept the GDHPs. They just plain hurt me.) Cheers

Joe

Joesolo -  sounds like you have all bases covered.
I definitely understand your frustration about the Golden Sabre FTF.
Let us know how it goes.

Joe,

Good luck on your testing.

I personally feel that you can shoot 200 perfect rounds, but there is no guarantee the next round will not jam.  Then if that happens do you shoot another several hundred?

Now that is just me.  After about ten original testing mags over two sessions I was satisfied.  Then it was a mag every once in a while.  I never thought of the R9 as a high round gun.

I know there is the question of "When can I trust the gun to fire when needed."  Thing is you never know and can't - you just have to believe it will.  I have known some who had a flawless R9 for hundreds of rounds - then one day started getting FTFs.  Now though I think the new mag springs may have prevented some of those.

;DDave is Spot on with that asessment. I      to confess but last weekend I took my very early R9s Farmingdale out of the truck gun safe where it had been, in a Hedley holster of course, for 9 mos. untouched and proceded to shoot three mags flawlessly at a target 25ft away groupings of 4' & less holding freehand standing. This is one fantastic little pistol but we already Knew that. :P

FWIW I did my test over the weekend. I had wanted to wipe the slate clean and redo everything. So, I shot 100 WWB bullets without any issues. Shot it lefty, righty, from retention, etc. After the 100 I shot plus the other range sessions I'm 100% sure it is as reliable as guns get. No more testing. It's just carry it and clean it form here on out.

I still think it is a good idea to put a mag through it once a month or two - forces you to clean it.

Easy for me to say since all I have to do is walk out by back door and blast away.

And a nice back door it is. Great pictures Dave on the other thread.  I also agree a mag or two  here or there just to keep everthing from gumming up.  Dan

MountainMan,

Agreed.I am not quite as lucky as you on the range situation BUT my club is 2.3 miles from my house. I can hear the bigger bore guns on quiet mornings. As the crow flies I'm not sure how far but close enough to know when the guys are out there. Thanks

Joe
