New Mag Springs are IT
« on: March 07, 2007, 10:39:00 PM »
For any of you folks with failure to feed problems and have not gotten the message…GET   THE   NEW   MAGAZINE   SPRINGS!!!

I have had all the FTF problems.  Tried all the solutions, various ammo, “limp wristing”, etc.  Just was not comfortable carrying.  About 450 rounds total and averaging about 1 FTF per mag.  In January I ordered the new mag springs and was able to get to the range last week.

Total joy (almost).  First two mags (6+1 and 6) finished off my last Spear Gold Dot  115 gr. with no FTF.  Next two mags (6+1 and 6+1) Winchester Ranger 147 gr. with no FTF.  Last two mags (6+1 and 6+1) Spear Gold Dot 124 gr. (I asked for 115 gr. but this is what the salesperson gave me & I didn’t check until I was loading up) first round of each made the mag become unlatched and drop down enough to not chamber round 2.  Only the first round, only 124 gr. Spear GD.

Anyone else have this happen?  I am fairly sure (but not absolutely positive) that my finger or hand did not push on the latch but I just can’t imagine the shock forces alone moving the latch.  Comments, thoughts most welcomed.

By the way, when replacing the mag spring, make sure the bottom plate that pushes on the spring (sorry, don’t know the proper terminology) has sufficient upward bend on the front portion so that it hits the inside of the magazine.  Otherwise even though it is locked into the bottom sliding cover, both pieces can slide off.  You ask how do I know this?  Well, I was showing my son that you should always check every part for proper function and not just trust that if it looks ok then it is ok.  So after assembling it I pushed on the bottom sliding cover and to my surprise it launched across the room.  Find all pieces and reassemble.  Test again but more carefully.  Boing.  Re-find all pieces and re-reassemble.  Test again but even more carefully.  Boing.  Re-re-find all pieces, bend plate just a bit and re-re-reassemble.  Test again.  No boing.  Ok, I was a little embarrassed but much better to find out in the shop than when really needed.

Oh, have I mentioned GET THE NEW MAG SPRINGS yet?

Good deal Craig, thanks for the information.  I don't have feeding issues with my gun but to be on the safe side I'm gonna order new mag springs and extra recoil springs too.

Your experience with the mag spring and the reassembly was just the same as mine.Guess that we are members of the second chance club.I wonder how many other owners gave up before the new springs became available.Once I found that 115 GDHP feed I stuck with them.Winchester white box also does well for me and works for low cost practice.

I too have had the mag drop down after not pushing it up far enough to clip into the catch. Glad you got the R9 runnin good. ;)

Thanks for the feedback.

The sample size is too small to say for sure that the 124 gr. is a factor in the mags dropping but I find it interesting that this did not occur with the 115 and 147 gr ammo.

I am careful to push the mag fully into position.  The design of the R9 gives very good visual and tactical feedback of the position of the mag since it is not recessed into the bottom of the grip.  Though the spring provides substantially more force so maybe the latch is almost but not quite fully engaged.  I will need to check this out more closely.

Hope I don't need to carry with 1+5 instead of 1+6.

CraigT,

I do not know why for sure that you would "spring"out the mag with 124s? Did you have the problem with your old springs before changing?
I do not know except for maybe the tension in the spring, and a slightly different dimension on the round, why this would be happening!! ???
I personally have not shot 124s in my pups, all 115s of different flavors..

If I have not welcomed you-welcome to the forum..

Brenden, so sorry for the delay in responding.  Got caught up in remodeling the office, computer off for a while…

Thanks for the welcome.  Been around for a couple years, posted a bit but you all are so much more knowledgeable that I mostly read & learn.

I checked my logs and see that I had exactly 10 mag drops in 500 rounds, before the new mag springs.  Mostly the first round, but once at round 3 and once round 4.  All but one mag was Spear GD 115gr.  Is it possible that the latch spring now needs to be stronger since the mag spring is applying much more force against the latch?  I really need to get back to the range to see if this is an anomaly or a true problem.  Am I the only one with this problem?

Call Rohrbaugh.  They don't seem to have them in the online store but they are available.  I ordered late afternoon.  Were in my mailbox the next day.  Even after I said there was no rush.
