Good NEWS and Bad News
« on: June 08, 2006, 08:25:04 PM »
Good News: Finally went to the farm and was able to shoot the new pup. What a great trigger pull! Feels great in my hand! Recoil not near as bad as I expected! Some comments had me worried. Points great and shot right where I aimed it at seven to fifteen yards. Put about forty shots of Hydra-shock and white box Win. through it......Bad News: The pup wouldn't shoot three shots without jamming! Stove pipes,
and all! I took it back to dealer and he and their gunsmith shot it with same results!
But More Good News: The pup has gone back to the "Kennel" and from what this form has said- i have NO DOUBT that they will fix it! I'm still  :) "Baby" will come home well!   Les

Les:

That "Bad News" portion of your report (stovepiping) sounds suspiciously like a faulty magazine, or insufficient lubrication of the slide-to-frame area -- or, dare I suggest, a less than optimal firmness in gripping the pistol when firing.

The R9, being the smallest and lightest 9mm semi-automatic pistol yet developed, has minimal tolerances.  Your ever-loving and always-forgiving 1911, it "ain't."

Let us know what develops, and good luck!

Les.
Welcome to the Forum.  Sorry your first experience with your R9 was less that perfect.  Mine was flawless until 200+ rounds, when I changed the recoil spring.  I worked thru that and now have 647 rounds thru mine.  I've been firing mostly Speer GDHP 124 gr. & 115 gr. ammo "for effect" and trying a box of most of the premium brands here and there.  The Speer rounds are the most reliable, but I do have an occasional failure to feed - generally a stovepipe jam.  I've even developed a quick-stovepipe-clearing drill:  Push a hunk of wooden chopstick down on the rim of the next round in the magazine.  Generally that will allow the semi-stovepiped round to side into the chamber.

Yesterday, I bought a box of Winchester Silvertip 115 gr. ammo at the range.  I fired the half the 50 round box thru the two mags I had with me.  No problems  ;D
Firing the 13 rounds of Speer GDHP originally in those mags resulted in one failure to feed.
The Speer Gold Dots have been very consistent in length @ 1.119" - 1.115"
The Winschester SuperX Silver Tips ran 1.087" to 1.083" and are noticably "skinnier" at the tip than the GDHPs.

Conclusion: I'm switching to Silvertip as many of the Forum members have (and I'm told Karl Rohrbaugh carries them, too.)  Personally, I like the GDHP better than the Silvertip, but in a defensive weapon, reliability trumps "favorite loads".

I hope you get your pup back without delay and it runs reliably for you.  Make sure you the FAQ section.  It has lots of good info on maintenance, etc.

Not sure if I welcomed you yet les :)

Several things possibly involved with the stovepiping - wondering slide xcursion was full - recoil spring still a shae strong and some slide drag.  Who knows but disappointing.

Hope an answer can be found to sort out the thorobred pup!

Les,

Welcome!!

I recently purchased a pup as well and had one FTF out of 85 rounds of various ammo brands. I did elect the Win. Silver tips 115gr as my choice of carry ammo.

I think I may of had an advantage when I took my pup out for its first walk. Prior to purchasing the R9 I owned a Kahr PM9 and experienced much of the same you mention above, mine due to a combination of grip control and probably some limp wristing. I was basically shooting the gun as I would my Sig 228. They are not the same.

R9 and PM9 =greater recoil, less grip surface to hold onto =FTF (use grip tape) or I use a Pachmayr slip on. Works great!!

Shooting hand comfortable moderate pressure, off hand increased pressure. Keep wrist rigid = smooth as silk

Regards, Fred

I realize that I didn't do a very good job in my previous post. I was just so excited and pleased with my new R9s. I really love everything about it except that it wouldn't shoot more than three shots without some kind of a jam (not all stovepipes) most often two cartridges, one coming out of the mag and pushing the one on top at an angle into the top of the chamber. I don't know enough about the gun and how it shoots to know if it was me or the gun. I tried once to re- cycle the slide to chamber a round from a new mag and the slide was jammed. Later when I was trying to show a brother-inlaw what was wrong- it worked! We went out and fired a couple of mags with same sort of feeding problems, but no more sticking slide.

Now, let me begin at the beginning. I found the gun at a local dealer and fell in love with it! I had a HK usp compact 40 in the trunk and since I've never shot it much I used it as a trade toward the R9s. The dealer didn't have anything except the Hydra-shocks so I bought them and I had a couple of boxes win wbs in 9mm that I had left over from a Sig that I sold last year.  Anyway when we came back to Nashville I called Rohrbaugh who told me that the gun was warrented to someone else, so I went back to the dealer who assured me that it was a new gun, in the mean time Rohrbaugh had called back and told my wife that they were mistaken and it was a new gun! It did NOT have a warrenty card in the box which had helped prompt my call to Rohrbaugh. While all of this was going on at home I was making my feelings clear to the dealer as to how I felt! Truthfully, they were very polite and assured me it was new and could be warrented and that they would take care of it. The shop owner and their gunsmith later test fired the gun and then sent it back to Rohrbaugh. It's been gone about two weeks now. I don't know yet how all of this took place! I don't hold it against the dealer, now that I know they told me the truth and didn't sell me a used gun, I'll probably do more business with them sometime. I don't hold anything against Rohrbaugh for giving me bad information, we all make mistakes, and they were nice enough to call me back and to warrenty the gun. I love the gun, and I've ordered RJ's highcut Merlin pocket holster to carry it in. There's a gunshow at the Fairgrounds tomorrow and I'm going to buy the right kind of ammo (silvertips and gold dots) for it. The gun's fault or mine for it's poor showing, I've ordered an Uncle Mike's slip-on grip for it and I'm going to learn how to shoot it!

I'm a retired pastor, I have hunted and fished all my life and admit to carrying concealed legally for most of my life. Thankfully I've never had to use a weapon against another, but I believe that it's my God given resonsibility to provide for and protect my family. I appreciate all of your help and your knowledge about the pup, and your welcome to the forum. I'm sorry my post is so long, and I'm looking forward to getting my gun back and letting you know the outcome of my lenghtly story. Thanks, Les

Just wondering- if a dealer sends your gun back to Rohrbaugh, what is the turn around time? How long do you think it will take for me to get my pup back? Thanks, Les

Not sure Les of any hard and fast rule here but - I do know that any guns that do go back - leaving aside shipping time - have in past in almost all cases been dealt with most expeditiously - matter of days.

Hope not too long for you.

Thanks RS9Carry, that makes me feel better. I really love the pup even with the long story of our brief relationship. I want it and myself to shoot well. I can hardly wait to get it back and try again. Les
