Do all your homework right up until you are ready for your flight, check TSA as well as the airlines regulations, they differ, and I think they vari from each official individual you come in contact with. For example the last trip I was not asked to open the container with the pistols in it, and you should place the "Firearm Declaration Tag"inside the container. I walked over from the ticket agent for the airline directly to TSA, told TSA I have to put the tag in the container, he said we don't need you to open it and it got swiped for explosives and then x rayed and onto the plane when I left. It was hand carried to the luggage department at the other end, it is not placed on the carousel with the other luggage.
I did have ammunition in it's original box, plus I had spare magazines loaded full with live ammunition and placed in magazine carriers, and holsters and a knife.
On the return trip, the airline ticket agent had me open the container didn't care to see the pistols as they were enclosed in pistol rugs, didn't worry about the ammunition, but she wanted to make sure the tag was placed in the container.
I also had a print out of their regulations as well as TSA's in the container.
