How much break in B/4 carry
« on: September 24, 2005, 05:25:19 PM »
It has always been my personal procedure to shoot at least 500 rounds with no failures thru any new firearm I am going to carry.  Of course my new R9 isn't really made for that type of range shooting.  What have most people done as far as a break-in / reliability assessment is concerned if they carry the R9.

My #1 R9 break-in was pretty much thru ammo testing - and the second one was less than 100 rounds.

I'd say 100 should do it for most but - within that period I reckon it is essential to find the best ''diet'' that gives best function, which for me is GD's - 124's mostly but 115's are fine too from those I fired.

If after break-in, from a clean gun, I can shoot two mags trouble-free I feel well confident to carry.

I'd have to say I would go a bit more than two mags full without failures before I'd feel extremely comfortable.  Ideally, about 200 rds without any failures is what is recommended by firearmstactical.com and elsewhere.  But despite the fact that I probably have never gone more than 50 rds without failure so far, I still carry the little beast.

Should it jam when the chips are down, I do have a backup plan, courtesy of Ben Jabituya, in  the movie "Short Circuit."

I've carried mine since the first 50 rounds.  The only round I've had a problem with is the Golden Saber.  Two out of six failed to fire on the first strike.  All other brands work well.  I currently carry Silvertips and Fed. 9BP's.  I have two boxes of GD on order, 115 gr. or 124.

FWIW.
