Had a scare today.
« on: May 05, 2007, 11:43:25 PM »
Last night I stripped down the R-9 and gave it a good cleaning. This is the first time I field stripped it. Every thing went well untill it came time to insert the recoil spring. I tried to do it using the channel locks as per the directions. What a pinta. I tried at least 20 times to hold it in the locks but it slipped every time i tried. Shot the spring across the room and had to hunt down the cap a couple times. Not fun. Finally I got mad enough to just squeze it down with just my fingers and popped it in. Whew. Today I decided i better test it out, so I loaded up some American eagle fmj's and fired off a mag. Had a bunch of stovepipes and fail to feeds. Then while trying the 3rd mag. the trigger stopped functioning.
I took the gun back to my bench and figured I better check under the grips and see if anything was disconected that I could fix. Unfortunetly I did't have a 1/16 allen wrench so I had to run into the hardware store to get one. I got the grip off and sure enough the bar that pulls the trigger and return spring were off. Easy fix. Next I checked the recoil spring against a new one, and it was a tad shorter. Maybe 1/8 inch. Replaced the recoil spring, put it back in just using my fingers. I loaded 3 mags. I had bought another mag. & 2 extra recoil springs, and had received them yesterday. All 3 mags ran fine. I must have tweeked the first recoil spring with all the fooling around the first time. I am not sure why the hammer-trigger bar came off. The grip did not seem loose but I tightend it up real good, so will just have to see how it goes. I am going to keep an eye on the grips and check them frequently to see if the loosen. I think all is going to be ok. I am going to carry it for a week and then function test it again. Will let you all know what happens.

Glad you got it worked out.  I had no problems putting my gun back together after my first and second outting, but after the 3rd, and I replaced the recoil spring with a new one I had the same problem you did.  The newer spring and tension gave me fits trying to get the spring cap and guide rod into place.  Later on I lucked into one of RJ's fine take down/put together tools and it's made all the difference in slapp'n it back together.  No clamps needed anymore.  I don't think RJ's got anymore for sale so check out the classifieds here.  You might run across one like I did.  Well worth the $.  Maybe if we  :'( loud enough RJ could build some more of them.  The Rohrbaugh bros. should seriously consider adding this tool as part of the "goods" that come standard with the gun.

I have been nervous about the trigger bar ever since I read the manual statement that the right side grip needs to be tight. I used to have an Autauga .32 and while the trigger bar never came off, I realized after taking off the grip it was very close to doing so. So my solution was to take the trigger bar off and give it an ever so slight bend. This made it stay in place much more securely. I'm going to check out the trigger bar on my R9 later today.

+1 on the RJ part.  I originally bought the take-down tool and
later purchased the take-down and put-back tool.  What a
difference it makes.  I never could bring myself to use the channel locks even after I cut leather, plastic, etc., to cover the grooves on the pliers so I wouldn't scratch anything up.
Hats off to Mr. Hedley.........
