Just Took Delivery of a New Rohrbaugh R9s
« on: March 18, 2009, 12:23:34 PM »
This is a piece of art.  I do have a question on ammo.  I haven't been able to find Winchester 9mm 115 gr. Silvertips but did find a box of Hornady 9mm 115 gr FTX.

Any advice on this ammo?

Thanks!

Ken

kjtrains:

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on acquiring your new work of art. (The R9 is certainly in a league of its own.)

As for the Hornady FTX, while I haven't personally tried it in my R9 yet, there have been other Forum members who have done so with mixed but generally positive results. If that is the ammunition you have on hand, I would lubricate the R9, give the FTX a try, and see how your "pup" likes it.

Please keep us posted, and good luck!

Thanks for the reply.  I just have the one box but will certainly give it a try.

Thanks again.

Ken the R9 is a great carry and I love mine.  But don't get dissapointed if you find out your R9 is a picky eater.  It may only like steak.

Welcome!

Dino.  What does yours like?  I'll only feed mine Winchester
Silvertips once I find them.

Speer gold dot and silver tips are the only 100% feeders in my gun.  I can run others but almost always have a feed or eject issue.

Lately I have had to revert to small gun stores to find either.

However Dicks sporting goods did sell me gold dots last week and I still find silver tips at Walmart but I have to ask the manager to order them every chance I get.

I have tried Walmart and they were out.  I'll see if they will
order them.  I do have a box of Gold Dots on order from
Ammo to go, and a box of Silver tips from LG Outdoors; got
the last box.

Many thanks!

Now that I am confident in Silver Tips, those in the magazine will
come out before the next range trip and go back in afterwards.
Times are tough in the ammo world.

Usually WWB but I am thinking about some CCI Blazer because
they seem to be more available for now. I haven't ventured
outside of the Winchester/ Speer family for carry or range;
however, I am about to try some Hornady for carry purposes.
Winchester has a new PDX 1 round out but it is +P so that is
out for the R9, at least.

Regarding buying ammo at Walmart.  There have been several threads here about how un-2nd-Amendment-Friendly Walmart is.  I don't know if that situation has changed but I doubt it.

I try to buy my ammo at my local gun shop (for me, Gun Doctor in Longview) or at a gun show.  Actually, the last boxes I bought at a gun show turned out to be more expensive than those at Gun Doctor... my bad!!

My philosophy, even if it costs a few pennies more, is to support a local gun dealer and not Walmart...

I don't need warn that the 2nd Amendment is going to coming under incredible pressure in the coming days (we get what we vote for) so we all need to be extra vigilant.

And if you haven't joined the NRA and even your state's NRA, please do so at once!

+1 on joining the NRA and supporting your local gun shops.  Last time I checked, a one-year membership in the NRA was only $35.  A deal.

We have 250 million guns in the USA - and only 4 million NRA members!

Point well taken on Walmart.  I live in a small 2 gun shop town and try to buy everything I can there or at the gun show when it comes to a place with in driving distance.

But sometimes Walmart or Dicks is the only way I can shoot every week without running out of ammo.

I also live in a small town that only has one gun shop.  His prices are usually $4 to $5 higher than Walmart.  However, our Walmart now has very little handgun ammo.  The one gun shop also has very little.  His shelves look like a store going out of business.  Hope he's not.

Also been a member of the NRA for a number of years.

Did receive a box of Winchester 115 grain Silvertips from
LG Outdoors yesterday; the last box they had.  Hutsell Sports.com has some for $42.95 per box plus shipping, but that's too pricey for me.  After a few more weeks though, that price may seem ok and it will be higher.
