Guess what ?
« on: March 19, 2009, 09:07:38 PM »
Got my Stealth today. Broke it down, put on some Slide Glide with an oil floater. Then spent all afternoon trying to get it back together.  Guess what?  You have to make sure the recoil master is straight and LEVEL....Then it's a snap.

If I can get some decent outdoor weather I'll take the pup out and feed him some treats...Range repot later....

BTW My two fired cases had FC (Federal Cartridge) for a headstamp....interesting......anyone using them?

I found out about that straight and level business the hard way, too.
Thanks for mentioning it and maybe someone else can benefit.

Yeah, I had the same problem with my pups first bath last night.

First problem was just getting the spring back in there.  I couldn't keep everything compressed while getting it in place, so the guide rod would back up into the cup, then would just jam inside it trying to recompress it while in place.  I finally got the slide into the correct orientation that it went easy.  If I can just remember how next time....

At that point I put the slide on the frame and the guide rod poked forward before the slide was properly seated.  A quick look at the frame revealed a hole that the spring needed to enter on the frame.  It was jamming on the edge.  Lifted the edge of the rear of the spring slightly off the barrel and it went right together.

Gentlemen, believe me, I've also been there.   ;)

Every now and then, I go back and watch Chris reassemble his R9 in this video:

(Although I lack Chris' obvious hand strength and my reassembly method employs a Hedley "Stop Stick," after four years I'm still trying to beat his time.   ::) )

Richard:  Thanks for this post.  I've looked at the link over and over and will continue to do so.  I like the idea of not using channel locks on the spring.  Chris makes this look easy.

Thanks!

My technique involves putting the spring and rod in first, and then tipping it out of the way, and then putting the barrel in afterwards.  Works pretty well.

I had tried all the above. I tried my brand new 2-1 tool from DCM today. My opinion is that the 10" channel locks work great. For the first time in 20 or so take downs/reassemblies I had trouble geting the pin out. Had to resort to brass drive pin and hammer. It's still worth the effort. I put 50 PMC 115gr ball through it today with no ftf/fte. That's about 300 rounds and no problems with Speer 115s, WWB, or PMC.

I do something similar as well. I install the spring/rod assembly, push it forward until the rod sticks out about a 1/4",then I hold the rod out with the end of an old tooth brush notched to slip around the guide rod. I can then tilt the end of the assembly up enough to let the barrel slide in. Slip out the tooth brush end, check for alignment, and install the slide. Don't know if that's clear enough to visualize ;).

Thanks for the welcome. 'preciate it. I have yet to fire mine. Just broke it down for a clean up and oil change ;D. Looking forward to giving it a work out as time permits. We all know how work and family impede our playtime ;).

3-22-09  Pup got fed Gold dot, Win Hollow points, Win value pack...25 flawless rounds. Went to put in another mag and slide was locked up. Would only retract 1/2 inch or so. Came home. racked and racked. Finally got it to open every thing looks ok, nothing broken or worn.
Question? Does the Rohrbaugh have to be broken in with a cetain number of round?

Anyone have any idea on why this happened?

You say that you put in another mag and it locked up; it
almost sounds like a mag related problem unless you think
otherwise. No, you should not need a "break-in" period for
it to function properly. I think any gun, however, runs smoother
after a few range sessions. The R9 in particular is easier  to
reassemble after doing it a few times.

Track...Went back out shot 50 rounds w/o a problem..Win HP
Gold dot, Value pack.......But It locked up again ( I racked 4 or 5 times and it cleared) I can honestly say I think the problem was my ammo. I thought was shooting Win white box ,..but was shooting 124 gr reloads that nephew had in a Win value pack. He marks the bottom of box for his.....I used a mag out of that box twice and both times slide locked.....Slide did not feed third round and locked up......Srtange but true...

I don't think it was the pup's fault but the brand of puppy chow he was eating......made him sick

I'll shoot another 50 rounds before I declare it my #1 carry gun
