so where do you carry it all?
« on: March 04, 2009, 01:30:27 AM »
I'm patiently waiting to hear from Tom that my R9s has been shipped in. In the mean time, I've just been carrying my Desantis nemesis holster to try to get a feel of what I'm in for (this will be my first time with pocket carry).

I'm right handed, so I'll be carrying in my right pocket and will have the 2nd magazine in my left. I'm not even going to try to keep my keys in my right pocket anymore, I'll be super angry at myself if I scratch my new pup with my keys, so those will move to the left with the extra mag.

Now, the only thing to figure out is where to keep my knife (normally clipped in my left pocket) and what side to wear my phone. And I don't even want to think about where I'm going to put my phone when I don't have a belt holster. Short of just buying a carpenters belt for all my stuff, it looks like it might be a challenge sometimes.

So how do you guys do it?

The pup will be in the right front pocket (were the LCP has been) money clip and change in left front, Emerson karambit on left pocket, cell phone on left side. And will probably get a mag holder for my belt.  John

R9 in right front or right back pocket cased in a Hedley Limited Edition or Back Pocket holster, depending on mode of dress, with cased spare magazine in left back pocket. Wallet in left vest pocket of suit jacket or left cargo pocket of BDUs. Nothing else (knife, keys, cellular telephone, flashlight, change, etc.) carried in a pocket with any of above items.

I assume you don't sit down with your R9 in the back pocket...right?

I think I'm just going to have to minimize....thin out my wallet, try to get some keys off my main keychain, maybe find a slimmer holster for my phone that I can wear when I'm not at work, etc.

Preston:

With a properly designed back-pocket holster, I personally don't experience any discomfort in sitting down with the R9 in the back pocket. Sometimes, I'll shift the rig slightly, depending on the seat, but it presents no problem. Even so, I prefer front-pocket carry and usually employ that method, which also permits wearing a belted primary at the "4:00 o'clock" position.

R9 in my front pocket with Jim's Hidden Holster, I had to move my knife to my back right pocket which can present itself to theft.

Just ordered a "Hide A Way" Knife and will see if this works for me.

Pup works great for me in my front pocket and I am an average guy in size.

Hmmm, lets start with the pistol and go clockwise from there.  I don't carry my R9 yet, but will as soon as I finish the holster for it.

Pistol:  Tuckable IWB holster behind right hip
R9 will be tuckable IWB too
Light:  OWB behind left hip
Extra Mags:  OWB behind left hip
Phone: Left hip, in front of extra mags
Wallet:  Left front pocket
Keys:  Right front pocket
Knife:  Clipped to right front pocket

Maineiac,
Boy, I'm glad I looked at this thread again and saw your mini-bugout bag!
A couple of months ago Clint Smith, the firearms trainer, recommended getting a small bag with a neck strap for your bedside so that if something goes bump in the night you just grab your bedroom gun, throw the bag around your neck and you're prepared for - whatever.
(The bag should contain extra mag(s), cell phone, earplugs, etc.)

Seeing your bag reminded me where my spare magazine is hiding!
I was going to call Maria on Monday and order another mag.  I might do that anyway.... ;D

I have always disliked IWB holsters with my 1911, but I find myself carrying the pup IWB more often than in my pocket.  It's so small that you don't really even feel it, unlike my .45, and it frees up my pocket for other stuff.

Preston - like you, I carry the pup in my right front pocket in a custom pocket holster. Mag in left pocket in custom mag holster as well.
Don't want to scratch pup, or more importantly, don't want keys or knife to get in way of draw or function of gun at  moment of most importantance.
I clip my Spyderco in my waistband just above my right pocket.  You will be surprised how quick and easy it is to draw.  And it is completely concealed as well.   Why tell everyone you are carrying a tactical knife by clipping it in your pocket ? - -- that exposed clip screams tactical knife!

As far as the keys -  I tuck them in my waistband as well, just to the left of my knife.   The key fob is long enough to hold all the keys secure.   Or now, with the new car/truck keys being so long and big with the "clicker" included, you can just tuck that key and it will hold your whole set of keys.

My cell phone is on a holster on my right hip.  My second cell phone is in my shirt pocket.
My wallet is in my right back pocket.

My left back pocket is open for whatever.

I carry everything comfortable, I can "draw" my keys, knife, cell, gun, mag, or wallet fast.
Nothing gets in the way of the other.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

And by the way, that is just back up, I carry a custom  Scott McDougall and Associates /Robar 1911 behind my right hip and spare mag behind my left hip.

Good Luck

FYI, I just read an article on self defense, the author said it was important that if you were right handed a knife should be in your left pocket or on your left side.

Reason is if you are in a fight you lead with your right hand it could get tied up by your apponent.  Same if you pull your gun and your apponent graps your right hand with gun in it, you want to be able to use your left hand to access your knife.

Practice with your left hand and knife deployment, it's harder than you think.
