Gun Safe
« on: September 29, 2006, 09:18:03 PM »

Has anyone had any experience with these or heard anything from those who have?  What is the reliability?  Specifically, does it always open when it should?  Does it ever open when it should not (e.g. someone else's fingerprint opens it)?

Inprint Hand Gun Safe

I have and use the mini gun vault, but this could be faster and more secure if it works as advertised.

Okay, here I am to tell you my tale of woe.  Although I don't have this specific brand of biometric access safe, I bought the one that was advertised and promoted on the NRA site for $400.00.  It worked fine until a few months ago when it would not open no matter which finger or hand I used. I must have tried it at least 1000 times to no good effect. I have since attempted to contact the manufacturer by email and voicemail dozens of times and have not been contacted in return.  I've contacted the NRA to see if they could get some response from the company but basically they said it was MY problem and they wash their hands of the matter.  Due to the NRA's unwillingness to help me with a product that THEY promoted and advertised I told them that I would not be renewing my membership with them; instead I'll support other second ammendment organizations.  Their reply: "We're sorry you feel this way".  As it stands now, I still can't open the furshlugginer thing and my Rohrbaugh R9s still sits in its innards.
My suggestion: get yourself a mini-vault with electronic keypad And a key access backup.  Much better setup!

My recommendation is to stay away from anything electronic.  You can't afford a dead battery if a burglar is coming up your stairs.  Stick with a purely mechanical 5-button Simplex lock.  Not only will it be more reliable, but it will cost less.

Eric:

That is a real "bummer"!

Of course, there is always the Small Claims Court route, but that would involve more time and effort than it would be worth.  I think my advice would be to try one more time to obtain assistance from the manufacturer, this time by formal letter (certified mail, return receipt requested) to the CEO of the company, copy to the General Counsel, advising that any further failure to respond will result in complaints being filed with the Better Business Bureaus of their state and yours, the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, letters to the editors of their advertising outlets, and postings to the major gun boards on the Internet.

If the manufacturer still ignores you, I would take the ****** safe to the best welding shop in your community and have the most experienced welder there cut the door from the piece of junk.  It should be able to be done without any damage to the R9 inside.

I would then take photographs of the breached safe and follow through by filing the threatened complaints, photographs included, with the BBBs, the CPSC, and the FTC.  I would would also send the photographs along with letters to the editors of magazines in which the manufacturer advertises and post the photos and a summary of your experience on some of the better gun boards.

"Don't get mad.  Get even."

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Thank you for the helpful suggestions!  The manufacturer says in the manual that there is a one-time code that can be used to open the safe, so I am not totally despondent over the issue. One way or another I WILL open that thing!  I guess more than any thing I am upset with the NRA's response.  They could have at least TRIED to help me.  I get solititations from them almost daily begging ( that is NOT too strong a word!) me for money but when I turn around and ask a small favor from them they treated me like I have the plague!  I will try again with the manufacturer one more time before I take it to the next level.  Thanks again Richard and Dan!
