First Look! R-9 Stealth with G-10 Grips!

Here are the first photos of the Rohrbaugh R-9 "Stealth" Model. These have the new G-10 grip panels with a freshened up logo with the Rohrbaugh name below it. The frames are coated at the Springfield, Massachusetts Smith & Wesson factory with their new coating, which is also used on their new M&P Pistol. (Military & Police) The slides are done in "Diamond Black" DLC (Trademarked). It is extremely durable and it is used by many of the leading firearm manufacturers in the United States.  The suggested retail price for the R9 "Stealth" 9mm Pistol will be $1,099.00.  Carbon fiber grip sets in black will be available as an accessory for $139.95.

How is it that my R9s has a higher S/n than this one; yet still has the CF grips & ann. finish?

The serial number don't necessarily go out the door in sequential order.

The serial numbers are applied as soon as the frame is created.  The number indicates the order of creation of the frame.  Frames are then pulled out for finishing.  Whenever your frame is attached to a gun and ready to go out the door, it goes.  Serial numbers have always been only an approximate indication of the shipping date of the gun.

This frame was probably at S&W for a while and is only now back and ready for sale.

A.  When are they going to be available for general sell?  

     I'm assuming the original R9 will still be produced - or am I wrong?


B.  Since this coating was advertised as a self lubricant - do you have any idea how this will change the lubing of the R9 - no more Superlube grease?

I am not sure when they will be available, but I am sure you can place an order now.  Production generally is still backed up a few months.

R-9s in the current finish will continue to be available -- except that they will have the new G-10 grips that can be upgraded to CF for a price.

I think its too early to say what the self-lubricating finish will mean.  Just speaking for myself, and not the factory, I would see the lubricating properties to be a back-up to lubrication.  I personally wouldn't run the gun in a dry condition regardless.  Besides, the only thing it could possiblly lubricate is the slide to frame interface.  I say keep lubing as usual!

I hope the grip texture is rough like it appears.  That woud reduce the need for abrasive tape applied to the grip.

It will be interesting to see if the new finish rubs off where the slide hits the frame at spots like the current finish.

Looks like a winner - may have to go with R9 number three eventually to make one of each manufacture.

We need some new R9 stuff to talk about here anyway.  Should be exciting.

Any idea if this chemical process will make the slide more durable?  What about scratch resistence?

The slide finish process is the same that his currently used by S&W on their M&P pistols, and variations are used by Kimber and others.  

This is top-notch, state of the art stuff.  It will be a good finish, but all finishes will show some wear and scratches...

If it is the same "Diamond" coat used by Kahr, then the finish is durable. I would still lube.

My question is: what is the weight of the gun with the new G10 grips on?

The black melonite finish on the S&W M&P is a through hardened finish that is supposed to be similar to the Glock tenifer finish. If this is what Rohrbaugh is using, I would think it would make the slide even more wear and scratch resistant, although the slide, being stainless steel, was already much more wear resistant than the frame.
