Ain't So Brand New Anymore
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:31:36 PM »
Ok,  during a lunch break at work (Daytona Race Detail) I quickly pounded down a fried grouper sandwich and I scooted over to the local range and quickly popped off 30 rds of ammo.  3 mags of 115gn Silver Tips and 2 mags of 115gn Gold Dot.  It was a nice overcast day air temp around 65 deg.  I checked in with the Rangemaster to let him know that I was gonna shoot some rounds off.  I then quickly set myself up down range about the 7yd line without a target, just the back berm.

1st mag(SilverTips)......1st rnd popped then, JAM, round nose dived into the feed ramp.  I cleared the jam and then emptied the rest of the mag with no other problems.

2nd mag(Gold Dots)  from start to finish no problems and for that matter no other problems with the remaining 3 mags, ran clean.... no other incidents.

I did not worry about the gun's accuracy since I didn't have time to post a target and it doesn't have sights anyway, but I did shoot it at a small piece of trash paper laying against the berm some 35 feet away.  I was very impressed with my shot placement, actually hitting the paper several times as well as making it dance just by shadow sighting from the slide's silhouette.  Now after I fired all 30 rds. and my excitement over the gun subsided ..... did the web of my shooting hand start to sting!  But it was a pleasant pain as I was very satisfied with my first trip out with the "pup".

Welcome!  Thanks for the range report, and glad to hear you liked the little guy.  ;D  Each pup has his own food preference, though most here have had good luck with Gold Dots.

I must admit, that I was likewise surprised with how accurately I can shoot a couple of mags from my R9 - I have no worries about shot placement in almost any situation I can think of where I might draw it.  Granted, it isn't as accurate out to say 50 yards as my Ruger Mark I is, but then, neither am I anymore...  ::)

not long ago, i started my stopwatch at lunch, dashed to the club and shot 50 five stand targets then home (home office) to see if it was feasible to shoot at lunch. Took me about and hour twenty there, shoot and back. ANyway, i appreciate your enthusiasm and glad to hear all went well. If I lived cloer to you, you could have my GDs, I cannot shoot them. FOr whatever reason they sting me like nothing I've ever shot.

I took it apart tonight for a good cleaning.  I considered waiting until I got some of the tools talked about earlier that would make it much easier to take down and put back together.  But my curiuosity got the best of me and I took the plunge.  I found that if I used my left hand thumb and hooked it in the front of the trigger gaurd from the left side of  the gun and retracted the slide a little and pinched the slide in place with my index and "hello" finger of the same hand, I could hold it steady enough to use a punch to push out the pin that holds the slide on.  Take down from there was no bigee.  Upon examination of the frame rails, I noticed small slivers of metal attached to the grease on the inside rail that would lay underneath the barrel chamber when together.  I cleaned this and all areas of the gun paying  close attention to where the pieces of metal may have come from.  The rail area from both the slide and the frame where intact, no deformations were noted....I guess it came from the ammo?  (Remember the nose dive w/ the STHP?)

I lubed the gun down paying close attention to the sensitive areas with Breakfree.  I then started the task of inserting the recoil system back into the slide.  Surprisingly, it went in after a few attempts.  Ater the slide was back together though the hard part was lining up the recoil rod base and the cut out inside the dust cover of the frame.....that was a bugger.  I finally guessed right and lined it up and slid the slide back on and using the "pinch" method described earlier tapped the pin back on.  Racked the slide multiple times and pulled the trigger...everything back as it should be....no big headache, no regrets.  I remain impressed with this gun!

If you're willing to ship the GD, I'll be happy to buy them from you.

Hk - Thanks for the great range report.  Glad to hear that you were not intimidated by the take down without the gadgets.

Don't forget to check the grips screws, especially the right panel.

Well,  I'm actually  amazed at the genius of RJ's take down and put back together tool!  It's so slick and classy look'n. There are so many good ideas shared on this site.  What a boon for R9s owners to be able to come here for answers and advice about their guns.

Quick question about the grips, the G10 versus the Carbon fiber....are the screws holding better on the G10's as opposed to the CF's?  I shot mine just a little and the screws on my gun are still tight and snug but I've heared so much about the screw issue that I am tempted to apply some Loc-tite to them.  How are they holding up? durability wise.

Oh and I've got to get me one of RJ's tools and some more recoil springs and maybe stronger mag springs and oh one of JR's pocket holsters and some carbon fiber grips and.......

Those small slivers of silver metal that you found  when you took the pistol down for cleaning are   pretty common during break-in and nothing to worry about. Wipe them away and re lube.

HK - I can not tell you how the differrent grips affects the screws and their tightness.  I only have the G-10.
I suppose vibrations & dampening qualities can factor into that as far as differences.

From what I have read on previous posts, lock tite is not a good idea.  It leads to stripped scew heads.  I used a very small amount of clear fingernail polish myself.  It seems to be holding fine. I haven't needed to pull the grips off yet.
