home defense long gun.
« on: August 21, 2013, 08:29:27 AM »
I've recently been in the market for a 556 rifle for home defense.  I've been mostly interested in one of those new tavor bullpups.  It seems to be ideal for home defense.  Anybody have any experience with it? Or perhaps recommend something else?   Thanks in advance.

I think you are on the right track.  If you can compare the Tavor and FS2000 before you buy, I would do so.

I also like the Beretta ARX 100, made in Maryland.

The arc looks like a winner.  But for Home defense is like a shorter barrel and with the tavor I keep 16 inch ballistics and have a very short rifle without any tax stamp.  I had a ps90 and the trigger wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.  I will try the fs2000 just in case.  If anyone has any other recommendations let me know.

The Bushmaster ACR looks good to me also and has a 16 inch barrel available like the ARX 100. Any of these options is a better design than the AR, in my opinion.

I am a fan of Bullpups myself. I'll take my Steyr AUG over one of my AR's anyday!

I'd love to try one of those Tavor's out.

Make sure you check out the Kel-Tec RFB Bull Pup Rifle as well. Made by a well known Top Ten Company in Florida w/ a lifetime warrantee by a company that will be around if you need it.

One of the best home defense weapons is a shotgun, less need for pinpoint accuracy, less worry about overpenetration or ricochet.
A Benelli M2 or M4 would be an excellent HD weapon.

The 308 may be a little much for home defense in most instances (you may take out a lot of neighbors for several blocks) actually the 5.56 is iffy for home defense depending on where you live because it will go through interior and exterior walls like a knife through butter.
If you have children or other family in the home this is a serious consideration.

As for IWI  (Israel Weapon Industries) maker of the Tavor, they seem to be a pretty solid company that will be here for a while. They have a fairly impressive list of weapons they make with the Tavor and others being used by military and police in many countries now.

Small arms and squad weapons produced by Israel Military Industries or Israel Weapon Industries.

Pistols   = Jericho 941 - Desert Eagle

Submachine guns = Uzi - Micro Tavor (converted to 9×19mm)

Assault rifles = Galil -  Galil ACE - Tavor - Micro Tavor

Machine guns = Dror - Negev

Anti-tank = MAPATS

The decked out Tavor is pretty impressive looking.

All I can say is Amen.  If you live on a farm or ranch, it could be a different story.

Don't most people who are in the sandbox of self defense own a shotgun?

I have a kel-tek plr16 .223 pistol.  Even outdoors, it is so loud that you really want ear plugs and ear muffs.  I imagine that unmuffled indoors it would result in permanent hearing loss.
It runs great, is light and compact, surprisingly accurate, uses ar15 magazines, and is a total blast. It is a real crowd pleaser. I like the idea of normal capacity 30 round magazines for emergency defense, but I personally think that handgun calibers are a better answer for most home defense needs.

But, on the other hand, I am always for any reason to add to the personal arsenal. Sometimes you just NEED it.

You make an excellent point about potential hearing loss, Griff; that is why I have no greater than a 9mm or .45ACP in pistol caliber for home defense. My shotgun of choice is a 20 gauge, for much the same reason. The .223, 357 Magnum, and .40 S&W are there for different purposes.

Shotguns are good for home defense as long as you are careful of the ammo used. But the original question did not mention anything about being interested in Shotguns. (I myself have a Remington 870 from Nighthawk Custom) On the subject of Bull pups, I have a friend that called me last night and told me he has a like new FN FS-2000 for sale for $1850 if interested.

Jason asked for other recommendations and that seemed to open the shotgun door.
