This is why we will probably never see the rebirth of the R9
« on: March 23, 2017, 08:08:49 AM »
Someone on here mentioned that they had the original retail paper work, WAY COOL. It was $1250. Just for the heck of it I used the inflation calculator to see what would cost in 2017 dollars. .......$1750.

Yes $1750 is a bit of change but you must also look at who would fit these together. Maybe someone like Wilson Combat, or Turnbull Restoration would have the knowledge, and staff, to build these but their labor is on the VERY high side which would mean this would  bring prices to over $2000.

Those in my will are not arguing about my coin collection, BMW, or house but there is a LONG line who wants my R9. Guess I just need a few more while they are still affordable. Look what happened to Pythons :-\

But you have to remember that Pythons are very rare.

They only made 600,000 of them!

The theory is the Remington is going to use their mass production techniques, supply chain, and economies of scale to produce the gun much cheaper than Rohrbaugh ever could.

However, I suspect that the R-9 is on the razor's edge of how small/light a 9mm semi-auto can be made given the laws of physics and all, and the design might not lend itself to mass production as easily as they had hoped at the much higher pressure 9mm levels.

I have NO inside information -- this is me speculating...

I would be very, very surprised if Remington would bring out the RM9 on an alloy frame like the RM380.

If they would bring out one at 1/2 the Rohrbaugh price, say $600, they would sell 10 times what they could at $1200.

At the $600 price you are getting into the crowd that has but one pistol and they would shoot the damn thing to destruction with who knows what type of ammo.  Warranty work would be a nightmare.

OK . . . OK. . . Time for "The Old Man" to step in here. lol.

Interestingly enough, what Kevin mentions here about the retail pricing of our gun in todays dollars is spot on. Back in the early 2000s, Mr. Bill Wilson stopped by our booth at the trade show in Las Vegas, the famed S.H.O.T. Show. He already had a few R9s on order for him and family members, etc. and he says this gun, the R9, should be sold all day long for $1,800.00, so why aren't you guys selling it at that price point? The answer was simply this. . . . Brother Karl was numbers shy about doing that. He did not think anyone would buy them for that amount. I begged to differ. I explained to him we would make more money on them and sell less of them, which would really allow us to go the real extra mile and really make them spectacular. He didn't see it that way, so we made more of them in a "standard fashion" so they retailed. . . . RETAILED around the $1,095.00 mark for the "Standard" and $1,195.00 for the "Stealth", with dealer cost being below that, of course. We were too close to the edge on the cost to manufacture to the jobber cost to keep things going for long, as was the case. If we were to make those pistols today, it would certainly be priced much higher than years ago. (I can hardly wait for the backlash on this little story - ecr)

PS:  One other thing. . . yes, the R9 was "right there" on the edge of what you can do with regards to it's size and caliber. There was nothing like it! Can you say: "Pushing the Envelope"!? . . . . . That was the Rohrbaugh R9 Series Pistol!

How would one go about checking on that?  I could be a candidate for that option of they don't have one (not soon I hope, but upon my not needing it anymore).  However being their Gun of the Year a while back I would hope they have at least one.

Good point Mike. I have a few of my own laying around. I think I'll give Wayne a call and ask if he'd like to have one for the museum. I thought of that a few years back, but never followed up on it. It would be nice to have one there on display forever. Back in 2002, I had a picture taken with Wayne LaPierre and I and he was holding the R9 in his hand. For some reason, that photo, taken at the time in one of those digital cameras, disappeared out of the camera, along with all of the photos from that day at the SHOT Show. What a shame that was. I have a photograph of Wayne and I in a hallway talking, but that's about it. Oh well. . . . the memory is in my mind for now, until I loose that too!  lol . . . . .
